Glucosamine Sulfate, Chondroitin Sulfate, and Hyaluronic Acid
Glucosamine and chondroitin are both natural components of cartilage. Numerous animal and human studies have examined the effect of giving these nutrients orally on joint health, and have demonstrated significant clinical benefit.
Hyaluronic acid is also a normal component of cartilage and joint structures, and has been shown to be a “chondroprotectant” — a substance that protects cartilage from damage.
MSM
MSM (methyl sulfonyl methane) provides sulfur compounds for the formation of cartilage. A combination product containing MSM, glucosamine sulfate, and chondroitin sulfate was given to rats with experimentally-induced joint inflammation. The combination provided protection against cartilage damage when given acutely, and better protection when given chronically.
Botanical Extracts
Curcumin Phytosome
Curcumin, an orange-pigmented substance derived from turmeric root, has been shown in many animal and human studies to dampen inflammation and improve quality of life. CurcuVet® curcumin phytosome is the best absorbed and most clinically-researched curcumin product on the market.
Bromelain
Bromelain, derived from pineapple stems, dampens inflammation and has been shown to speed healing and resolution of bruising.
Boswellia
Boswellia, also known as Indian Frankincense, has been demonstrated in animal and human clinical studies to benefit joint structures and dampen inflammation. Boswellia reduces the amount of an enzyme regulating inflammation messenger molecules.
Cautions and Warnings
Administer during or after the animal has eaten to reduce incidence of gastrointestinal upset. Safety during pregnancy is a concern. If lameness worsens, discontinue use and contact your veterinarian. Federal Law limits the off-label use of this product in ruminants. For animal use only. I’m a huge Thorne Vitamins fan so was thrilled when I discovered they also have a Vet line. I started giving my dog Arthroplex Powder 3 weeks ago, It took 2 weeks to see results, but now… WOW! This past week my nearly 14 year-old dog went bounding up stairs that he’s avoided for quite a while and has wanted to play more with his toys and other dogs. As a huge bonus, he also seems to love the taste; I just mix the Arthroplex Powder into his meals and he eats them with enthusiasm. And I LOVE that the Powder only has 2 listed inactive ingredients (1 of which is great-for-him flaxseed), so I feel like he’s getting all the good stuff without any unnecessary junk. Again, we’re only 3 weeks into trying this, but… if the current trend continues I will give this to my dog for the rest of his life!
